Mail Fraud, Check Fraud and Card Crankin’Michael Carroll, United States Postal Inspection Service

Check fraud expert Mike Carroll, an Analyst with the USPIS who spent 29 years as a US Postal Inspector, will uncover the realities of check fraud scams today. The U.S. is experiencing some of the highest numbers in terms of cases and dollar losses in recent history. From mail theft and Crackin’ Card scams to friendly-fraud check schemes, Mike will share current trends, discuss critical investigation strategies, and provide valuable resources for mitigation at financial institutions.

Attendees will receive valuable resources to use at your institution.

When Checks Go Wrong!Mark Dixon, AAP, APRP, NCP, NEACH

As if dealing with check fraud wasn’t bad enough, resolving check dispute scenarios can be incredibly complex as we navigate different layers of governance and operational considerations from check law governed by federal regulations such as Reg J and Reg CC, then the Uniform Commercial Code (model state law that can vary state-by-state) which further defines checks and establishes the operating framework for negotiation and settlement, and when you peel the onion even deeper, we have operating rules, either Fed OC3 or Eccho, depending on how your institution exchanges checks. Adding further complexity, just because you exchange through Eccho doesn’t mean you can always resolve through Eccho. All these factors, coupled with lots of governance, can be challenging when you have multiple priorities you must worry about, and often check scenarios are time sensitive.                                                                                     In this session, we address topics related to transfer and presentment warranties, allocation of liability for alteration vs. forgery, and explore the logistical considerations such as returning, adjusting/WIC, or dealing direct when resolving cases. Attendees will gain a better understanding of how to navigate through various check-gone-wrong scenarios.

The Slippery Slope of Credit Repair Fraud - From Credit Washing To Synthetic Identity And Everything In Between | Frank McKenna, Point Predictive

In this session, Frank McKenna, aka FrankonFraud, covers the latest credit repair fraud schemes that are driving billions of dollars in first and third-party fraud schemes.  From credit washing to zombie debt reassignment to CPN-enabled synthetic identity - hear about all the latest scams and schemes and how to spot them before you get hit.

And in Other Fraud News…Terri Sands, CAMS-Audit, CFE, AAP, Stout and Rayleen M. Pirnie, BCJ, AAP, CERP, NEACH

Join Certified Fraud Examiner Terri Sands and Certified Enterprise Risk Professional Rayleen Pirnie as they dive beyond the “fraud headline news” and into practical applications to mitigate and/or investigate fraud. The session will highlight a variety of costly, common frauds plaguing institutions, businesses, and consumers. Pulling from current fraud trends not already addressed in the event, the panel will expose:
How the fraud is commonly carried out
Red Flags that fraud is looming
Guidance or FI requirements under Laws/Regs (as appropriate)
Sound business practices and mitigation strategies to strengthen your fraud prevention program

Uncovering Common Consumer Scams | Sean Blake, MCJ, Citizens Bank Business Services

Scammers methods to target consumers are evolving again. While many of the “tried and true” still exist, scammers are now compromising victims’ identities and bank accounts using more complex methods. From SIM Swaps to Tech support scams, we’ll explore the evolving world of consumer scams to help institutions provide more targeted, stronger messaged education to consumers, along with tips for internal FI procedures to minimize exposure to losses.

Social Engineering the First Line of Defense |Jennifer Bowring, Camden National Bank. Joshua Adams, AAP Camden National Bank, and Ryan McKinnon, CAMS, South Shore Bank

Social Engineering, or manipulating people into divulging information or performing acts, has exploded in recent years. Much of the social engineering attention has turned directly to the frontline at financial institutions, leaving the institution vulnerable to compliance issues, substantial financial losses, reputation risk, and even lawsuits.

Our expert panel will address social engineering, specifically from the frontline perspective, offering attendees a glimpse into the realities of how easily institutions could reveal PII, alter consumer contact information, or even initiate transfers on behalf of fraudsters. Using real cases and recordings of actual social engineering, plus tips to unravel these schemes, this session will be recorded and provided to institutions as an educational takeaway that can be used to help educate and arm your frontline against this costly form of fraud.
